Our circus pottery designs

Our vintage circus inspired designs feature animals including elephants, zebras and giraffes – as well as (and not forgetting) the all-important, classic red-and-white striped Big Top. Circus themed mugs make a lovely present for a child, while bowls, side plates and dinner plates are also available.

It’s a much-loved range and Royal Stafford customers tell us they have bought individual items to form the basis of a collection to be added to, enjoyed and treasured for years to come.

Celebrating the history of the circus

At Royal Stafford, we’re proud to be part of the heritage of North Staffordshire. Our home is in the Royal Overhouse Manufactory and is one of the oldest pottery factories in Burslem, the ‘Mother Town’ of the Potteries. In fact, research suggests that our site was in use from as early as 1787.

However, North Staffordshire isn’t just home to the world-famous pottery industry. There is also a strong local connection to the history of circus, an art form which became widespread in the UK before finding popularity across the world. Philip Astley, who was born in Newcastle-under-Lyme, is credited with being the first person to devise a show around a ring, complete with performing horses, jugglers and clowns.

How our circus pottery designs are made

We specialise in high-quality cream-coloured earthenware, which is a traditional Staffordshire product. All production takes place in our Burslem factory, using the skills of local potters and knowledge that has been passed down the generations.
